The In Between

Project statement

What began as a collection of images intended to have as keepsakes turned into a catalogue of curiosity. This project gives a glimpse of the urban landscape through the abstract lens. By viewing the city as a sum of its parts and exploring the layered experience of existing within it, I began to understand it as a multidimensional entity.

Within such a fast-paced environment, I aim to emphasize the notion that there’s value to be found throughout one’s journey, value that would otherwise be missed if focused solely on the destination. Through the practice of being present, Chicago has transformed into an endless domain of visual exploration with its many elements constantly shifting and changing. By embracing the essence of the In Between, I am able to use photography as a bridge between the world and the world within.

“Photography knows only the present but when Anastasia Murphy makes a photograph she does so with reverence for a whole genre of images that have led to that moment. We feel her enthusiasm for not only what she sees but for the tradition of  looking, understanding and distilling all of that into a precisely made photograph.

Anastasia’s pictures celebrate not only what’s in front of her but she reminds us of all of the images that have inspired her to get to that place and at that moment.”
