Year in Review: The Chronicle looks back at 2021

Project statement

This project is the spread of our December 6 2021 Year in Review issue, the last print edition of 2021 for the Chronicle team. This article is written by myself and the Co-Editor-in-Chief Noah Jennings to recap some of the major events of the year. We wrote about major national events including President Joe Biden’s inauguration and the January 6 insurrection. We also wrote about events more specific to Columbia, such as the Children on Campus policy, remote and in-person learning, and the tuition increase.

We took the opportunity to highlight the work our staff at the Chronicle have done throughout the year. The Year in Review highlighted our coverage of music festivals, protests, and celebrations, which gave our journalists the opportunity to report in-person again. We also wanted to highlight our coverage of campus issues such as the tuition increase, the Children on Campus policy, and my own work covering the contract negotiations between The United Staff of Columbia College and Columbia.

While 2021 was not as crazy a year as 2020, it still had its ups and downs. Narrowing down the numerous events that took place in Chicago and our Columbia community proved to be a difficult task, but the events we wrote about were the most influential in our community. As we entered 2022, this article served as a way for us to look back on 2021 and reflect on the wild year we had experienced.
