Project statement
“Just for Me” and “Home” are recorded performances of Sophia Cruz’s senior recital. The two songs are from her debut EP entitled “On My Mind”, released September 2021 during her time at Columbia. These songs are a representation of Sophia’s growth as a songwriter, marking Sophia’s path through school, life, feelings, and developing her own authentic sound. Just for Me is Sophia’s first ever single release, and Home is the last track of the On My Mind EP, which she considers a treat to the people who truly listened all the way through. FOR listeners the song marks its own exposition and development through the song- closing it out with nothing other than a funky jam. To Sophia this EP is the embodiment of representing her constant development up to this point.
About the Artist
Sophia Cruz is an American Funk, Neosoul singer and musician taking influence from artists such as Stevie Wonder, Allen Stone, Hiatus Kaiyote and Amy Winehouse. With soulful wisdom in her sound of rich, warm vocals in funky, pocketed grooves, she continues to offer a fresh perspective on music new and old inspired by the foundation of classic Funk, Soul and RnB.
